The Digital Publishing concept has already evolved and is allowing digital editions of magazines additional dimensions - in the world of publishing, it’s known as making use of ‘rich media’, which is what they like to call audio and video embedded in electronic documents - but the applications go beyond that. In addition to the attractive layouts and colourful, high-resolution images that the traditional document can offer, why not have a digital edition of your company brochure, newsletter, catalogue or flyer - and stimulate your customers' senses with music, video and interactive order forms?

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

These new-style digital documents can offer instant sales facilities. An order form can be included within the document, so the customer can order directly from the brochure.

You can monitor statistics much more effectively. With digital documents like these, you can tell which of your potential customers looked at which pages, for how long, in which order, and which links were clicked on. These stats can be used to improve the effectiveness of the publication, advise on successful formats, etc.

You save on print, packaging and distribution costs. A digital document should not be considered a complete replacement for printed promotional material, but it will reduce the size of your required print run.

Documents like these have a global sales reach, and quickly. Of course, you can post a brochure or email a PDF to a potential customer, but if a London-based sales guy is talking on the phone to a client in Scotland, he can simply email the web link (rather than a weighty PDF full of high-resolution pictures) and instantly further illustrate the company or product.

You can cost-effectively create numerous campaigns to target different types of client. After you’ve created a basic ‘template’ document, you can edit pages to target further specific groups of customers. You only pay for uploading those pages that are different in each version of the document, rather than having to create a completely new document for each version.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The layout design-work is created in the same way as for print, allowing for areas where video or Flash players are to sit. Pdf files are then created which are uploaded to the digital publisher where they are processed to embed any video, Flash and audio files. Once complete, they make it available on their server for you to look at, sending you an ordinary internet link to its location. You can then send this to your database of customers in a short, simple email that invites them to click on the link for more information. This avoids the need to send them enormous attachments, and allows them to access your ‘rich-media’ brochure, catalogue or newsletter from anywhere that has an internet connection.

IS IT EXPENSIVE?

As with all new technologies, there are various ways to take advantage of digital publishing, and many companies now offer a service, all with different fee structures. My digital publisher appears to be one of the most flexible and competitive companies operating in this area with a typical 'upload' cost of £25.00 per page and a minimal annual access fee. Design and layout costs would remain the same as a document prepared for printing. There would be additional costs for the creation or editing of video, audio, or Flash content which I will happily quote for.

INTERESTING FACT

It’s been proven that video is a more effective, persuasive medium to convey the benefits of a product or service: according to one survey, video is 2.6 times more effective than a traditional ‘static’ advertisement, and Flash-based adverts 1.6 times more effective.
